Final Jeopardy Category: Central European Beer

Perusing the web this morning, I came across an article at Roanoke.com that's worth checking out. By discussing topics such as the merits of aging beer, style definitions, or food pairing, it elevates the image of the beverage as a whole. Granted, this article's nothing that would knock the socks off your average beer aficionado by any means, but it's still refreshing to see this kind of dignified approach to appreciating beer.

And here's a beer-related question open to anyone. My desk calendar of random trivia had this for yesterday:

What beer is named for the Czech town that was once home to the royal brewery of
the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire?

If you get the city, you'll definitely know the answer. History and beer... that's my kind of trivia.

This is the brewery that was purchased in 1583, right?

Mmm... beer and history...

I'm glad somebody wanted to step up to the plate on this one! Well, the answer on the page was simply "Budweiser, named for its hometown of Budweis", so I'm assuming it's referring to the original style moniker.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the brewery itself I believe starts with a K, and I actually have one of their dark lagers at home as we speak. Granted, I was enticed to look that up when you mentioned the year, but still...

I guess I'm wrong, then. The beer I'm thinking of definitely starts with a K (from the town of the same name) and the brewery was purchased by our krayzee-est Holy Roman Emperor in 1583. I still think that's a better answer than Budweiser / Budweis, but maybe that's why I'm not in the trivia calendar business...

When you mentioned the year, I thought of Krušovice, but my research has only confused me more. Looks like it became the Royal Brewery when it was sold in 1581, according to their website.

Your next project is right in front of you... the beer history desk calendar. Hurry before Horst Dornbusch beats you to it!

I'd buy it, at least.
